In Silverton, a former mining town with roots in the late 19th century, a pianist named Lacey taps ragtime tunes on the ivories. Afterward, shop and walk around the main (and only paved) road.

Make the trek to Telluride, where you can take a free, four-minute box-canyon-view gondola ride to the center of Mountain Village, perfect for short hikes and easily accessible trails.
Telluride has a funky, friendly (to dogs, too) vibe. Stop for a little java — there are no chains in Telluride — and then browse several boutiques offering more than your typical T-shirt souvenir.
