In 1886 Police Commissioner Thomas Carroll led a campaign to properly house the rapidly expanding police force. These buildings are some the landmarks that came out of that campaign.

In the summer of 1936, 11 swimming pools opened in a series of grand ceremonies presided over by Mayor and Park Commissioner. The pools were constructed largely with funding provided by the WPA.
