This historic pub on the site of a tollgate was once the haunt of highwaymen, who when caught were hanged nearby. The pub appears in Dickens’ Pickwick Papers and in Bram Stoker’s Dracula.
This pub was built in 1720 on the site of an older tavern. As a boy Charles Dickens, who used to visit his godfather who lived nearby, was made to stand on a table and sing to the patrons.
Opening shortly after the Great Fire, this ancient pub was regularly visited by Dr Johnson when he was taking a break from writing the first English dictionary, at his home in nearby Gough Square.

Outstanding food. Fresh fish from Billingsgate market. Excellent choice of vegetarian dishes. Owned by the Meantime Brewery, with a great range of lagers, ales and stouts.
Includes a range of Spanish beers & wine. The clientele is an odd mix of young local hipsters, older people who have been coming there for 2 decades & tourists who seem to have wandered in by mistake.
awesome little boozer off the beaten track and away from the trendies. But trendy in itself. food looked good. Friendly staff. pingpong table and outside drinking :)
Tim, the winner of MasterChef 2011 works here behind the bar...but I don't think he was too happy about that! But none the less, a great pub, with amazing selection of ales, and pizza! I recommend it!
