Start with some pretty delicate versions of classic charcuterie, like tongue and pig’s head. Mains are generous and hearty. For dessert, go with the classic baba. En savoir plus

A perfect grace note for a not-inexpensive meal or a solid accompaniment to a nightcap or evening espresso, the rum baba is transcendent simplicity. En savoir plus

Everything was too salty. I asked for the sea urchin toast, and the server said they're busy making babies (the sea urchins) so we can't eat them :(

The firm ciabatta at this airy East Village restaurant holds an eight-ounce Pino’s Prime Meats patty (chuck, sirloin and short rib) and gooey Vermont white cheddar, absorbing the salty juices. En savoir plus

If you like anchovies, get the octopus salad. Really nice dish. Spare the rabbit pappardelle: bland flavor.

The New York strip was surprisingly good; better than the average midtown steakhouse. Pairs well with a primitivo

Delicious, relatively textbook French. At dinner, focus on smaller plates and share one big. Biggie: Rabbit Pappardelle. Smalls: Beef Tongue and Sea Urchin Toast. Good cocktails, too.

The roast chicken is an essential New York bite: pan-seared breast served in chicken stock with cabbage stuffed with confit leg and vegetables. More places to eat like a local: tandl.me/12ufz7c

Best Salad: Farm lettuces, feta and scallions. The lettuce is always conspicuously fresh, exceedingly crisp, and never, ever cut into bite-size pieces!
