This old school Japanese tea house occupies the gloomy downstairs level below the restaurant Kajitsu on E 39th. They prepare tea to take out, including probably the best matcha in NYC, hot or cold.

If you love matcha this is definitely the best place to go in NYC. The staff is super friendly and knowledgeable. They make cups to go, both hot and cold! En savoir plus

Known in Japan for their high quality selection of Japanese green teas, this Kyoto-based company keeps a hidden-away NYC outpost below vegan gem Kajitsu on East 39th.

If you hesitate to try regular macha tea or are tired of regular traditional tea, try lightly sweetened macha tea 宇治清水(Uji-shimizu). Small amount, but it was really delicious!!

The tables at the back belong to the restaurant upstairs, so technically there's no seating, but there are a few stools at the end of the bar (they're tipsy, so be careful).

Currently the only real Japanese tea shop in NYC, gapping the multi-year void left after Ito En's flagship shop closed back in 2011. Heed the staff's suggestions, as these teas are quite special.

Serene, delicious and such an experience. They put art and expertise in creating the matcha (although if you want to blend your own, it's at a slight discount.) Not worth it...

Most authentic tea shop in NYC, they have a variety of matcha powders and have drinks to go.
