Book your visit way before you come here, otherwise you'll have to make line at 5am or earlier to have a chance to get tickets for the dame day.

I don't care if it's touristy, I love this tour and have done it several times. The colder and rainier it is, the more I appreciate not being locked up out there!

Try and buy your tickets a month in advance (3 weeks before might not work) if you can't get a hold of them, queuing from 5am should do the trick. and you will get on the boat to Alcatraz!

Tickets almost always sold out. Either reserve your tickets well in advance or be prepared to bite the bullet and buy the tickets from a tour operator as part of a package.

The pretzels for sale on the cruise boats are probably in the bottom 5% of all pretzels in the world. Pick something else.

While tickets are sold out day (or even weeks in advance), a block of tickets are released each morning at 7 (even though the sign says 8). Get here early

Make sure to listen to sounds of the slammer. Show up at a minimum of 20 min early no later than that. Showing up an hour early isn't useful.

Make sure you get to shot a video of the boat leaving the pier, as if you're going to prison and never coming back.

If you're trying to take a picture at dusk or night of something in the distance, turn your flash off. Flash only works for things a few feet away.

A limited number of presale tickets are available. The ticket office opens at 8am to sell day of tickets. Get there by 6:30am to have a 99% chance of getting tix or 7:15 if you can deal w/ risk.

book in advance!! we had to buy a bus package with our tix cuz individual tix were sold out these 2 weeks. and i was pretty bummed we couldn't walk the nature trails cuz the birds were nesting :(
