On July 6, 1586, the Treaty of Berwick 'league of amity' or peace agreement was signed at the Tolbooth in Berwick between King James VI of Scotland and Elizabeth I of England.
The Treaty of Berwick was a mutual defensive alliance promising aid should an invasion of either homeland, take place. The two Protestant countries were threatened by the Catholic, Spain and France.
